How Did the Movie UltraViolet Inspire Me?

In my Thursday 13 blog post titled Movie Lists Fun (Childhood Favorites, Comfort Movies, All-Time Favs), I shared lists of movies, including my all-time favorite movies. Next to several of those movie titles there had been an asterisk, indicating that those films had inspired/influenced me as a writer.

The Movies:

Pitch Black

UltraViolet

Matrix: Reloaded

Van Helsing

Gothika

Once a month, I am going to highlight one of those movies and reveal how it inspired/influenced me.

This month's movie is...

UltraViolet

How did it inspire me?

1) Her kick-ass fighting techniques.

2) "Watch me."

3) Her beauty.

1) I mean...come on...those moves. She's graceful and badass at the same time.

When the female main character (FMC) of my Secret Book Baby Series fights, I picture her just as graceful and badass. Back in the day, I watched this movie practically daily, while writing. I used it to help me describe how my characters move when they fight. That's how I've gotten so skilled at writing fight scenes, which I actually enjoy writing. It's so much for fun me.

2) One of her sayings is, "Watch me," and I totally use that as my MMC's catchphrase.

Example from Book 1:
“You may be back, but you’re not going to win. You can’t stop me.”
“Watch me,” [name redacted] growled.

3) Then there's how freaking beautiful Violet's makeup is (Mila by extension). It may be part CGI or whatever (I don't know), but her face and makeup are flawless and eternal and has a paranormal glow and coloring. The FMC in my unpublished series is described by characters as having an alien beauty because of how flawless and stunning she is. She gets that from Violet.

In fact, I used to imagine Mila as my character. Just give her silvery-blonde hair (minus the bangs) and bright green eyes, and there she is.

  1. I haven't been watching many movies lately. I have been reading Pat Conroy's "A Low Country Heart," which is a collection of blog posts, letters, speeches, etc Conroy wrote and it provides an interesting view into the characters of his stories.

  2. I've never seen this movie. I have no idea what it's about, even. Funny how there's so much out there for us to find and connect with. I'm glad this movie has been so formative for you.

  3. It's been years since I've seen this movie. I did enjoy it, though. The fight scenes were great, and I'm always a fan of a good "Watch me." :)

  4. I've not seen any of these films as I've never been much for fantasy in either books or movies. I love how you have been so inspired by it. There's a few like that for me. I used to have them on DVD but then the new laptops don't have DVD players, I don't have a DVD player, and I can't find my favorites on any streaming service. This makes me sad.
