It’s a pleasure to be participating in author Yolanda
Renee’s MURDER, JUST BECAUSE Blog Tour through MC Book Tours today.
Yolanda is offering an awesome tour-wide international giveaway. More
information on the giveaway is listed below.
(Chrys: Discuss further the Feb. IWSG Post about how authors were shocked you would write such dark stuff.)
Thank you, Chrys, for hosting me today and for asking for more information on the questions I faced from other authors regarding my books, The Snowman and Murder, Just Because. I’ve been very open about the scenes of explicit sex and violence. I don’t want anyone to buy a book they can’t read.
So why did I write it?
How did Stowy Jenkins come into being?
For me, Stowy Jenkins represents all the evil in the world.
Every day this last year, before COVID-19, I would switch on the news, and the stories reported there made my skin crawl.
A young girl calls for an Uber, leaves the bar, and gets into the car she’s ordered. Except it isn’t. Her body is found a week later.
Another very young girl is at home when a man abducts her right out of her front yard. There are witnesses. Her mutilated body is discovered a week later.
A college student gets a text from a man looking for a date. She meets him alone in a park. Several weeks later, her mutilated remains are found in his home.
Another college student seeks help from a stalker. Both the police and college security brush off her concerns. The stalker kills her on campus.
I could go on. I won’t. I’ve made my point.
As I’ve stated before, sexual violence happens daily, hourly! It happens to children and adults alike. When a man kidnaps a young woman and rapes her, it’s not to make love to her. It’s to abuse, violate, and destroy. There is nothing pretty or “comfortable” about it.
No matter what I’ve written, this is the world we live in. I do not apologize for taking the ugliest of reality and putting it into my books. My goal was also personal. I want to defeat the evil that found me, and in my books--good always defeats evil.
As a survivor of rape, I know firsthand the horrors that others inflict on the innocent. I see the price the victims pay when others brush off concerns, ignore clear signs, and excuse the perpetrator because “those things just don’t happen!”
Stowy Jenkins is not unique.
He’s existed since the beginning of time.
(Chrys: I applaud you, Yolanda, for writing these scenes and this character, for going there in your mind, and for not backing down.)

"While
this book does contain explicit sexual language and graphic violence, it could
easily be taken from the daily headlines. The content is plausible and
realistic as we look at the world around us. The events in the book are not
overly done but give a pragmatic look at the terrifying actions killers can and
sometimes do take."
BLURB: It was a matter of beginner’s luck, but rookie detective Steven
Quaid’s career and reputation as an elite investigator skyrocketed when he
captured one of the most sadistic serial killers in Alaskan history: Stowy
Jenkins, AKA the Snowman. But that was ten years ago.
And now…Jenkins is back. Escaped from prison and on the move, his
bloodlust is stronger than ever, and his methods of torture are even more
horrifying than before. As his bloody rampage continues and the number of
mutilated bodies mounts, terrified Alaskans increasingly doubt Quaid’s ability
to catch the killer again. The detective’s reputation is on the line, and he’s
going to need a lot more than luck, because this time, Jenkins is driven by
more than the thrill of a random kill.
This time, it’s more personal. He’s out for revenge…and his
ultimate target is Quaid. In a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, Jenkins starts
picking off the people in Quaid’s life…slowly, gradually tightening his circle
of corpses and drawing ever closer to the most important person in Quaid’s
life...his wife. Can Quaid do the impossible again? Can he outmaneuver the
killer, or has the detective's luck finally run out?

At
one time Alaska called to me, and I answered. I learned to sleep under the
midnight sun, survive in below zero temperatures, and hike the Mountain Ranges.
I’ve traveled from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, and the memories are some of my most
valued. The wonders, mysteries and incredible beauty that is Alaska has never
left me and thus now influences my writing.
Despite
my adventurous spirit, I achieved my educational goals, married, and I have two
handsome sons. Writing is now my focus, my newest adventure!

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to follow Yolanda on her week-long tour HERE. You never know what you might find out. Do you enjoy watching a character grow from one story to the next?
As I read MURDER JUST BECAUSE I thought of all the different stories I had read online from around the US where the same type of crimes had happened in real life. This book may be graphic, but if anything it shows that bad things can happen to people when they are going about their daily lives (before Covid-19).
ReplyDeleteChrys, great topic. Thanks so much for being a part of Yolanda's tour and sharing this with your readers.
Thank you, and Yolanda, for sticking with me through all of the Blogger/registrar issues I had to fix. I'm really sorry about that.
DeleteI'll be reading Murder, Just Because very soon. I read The Snowman, and while it is dark and graphic, I enjoyed it. It drew me in, and I still think of Stowy at random times because he's an interesting and powerful character.
Thank you, Chrys! I appreciate all the stress you went through to get this one post, to post! :) LOL. Your new website is delicious! Beautiful and so well done! I'm just proud to be here, thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Yolanda!
DeleteSounds like a chilling read.
ReplyDeleteI hope so, thanks for stopping by, Elaine!
DeleteI'm with Chrys - good for you for taking this topic on head first. Good should always triumph!
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, it was something I couldn't walk away from. They say writing is therapy, and that's truly the case here! Thanks, Jemi!
DeleteI am so looking forward to reading the book, and I seldom read books that have all these things in them. But it is our world, and I should know more about it. This one calls to me. It's on my desk waiting.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Beverly, that means so much. You made me smile, I needed that!
DeleteHello Chrys and Yolanda. I'm sorry to have worried you, Chrys. Just that sometimes my iPhone lets me surf the blogs and comment, and other times won't. I wanted to make sure I left a comment somewhere. Thanks for hosting Yolanda on her tour. Thanks Yolanda for your post, scary as it is.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Denise! Hope your weekend is a lovely one, and definitely not scary!
DeleteHey Denise! Thank you! I normally wouldn’t have worried after reading your FB comment but after the day I had with everything with my blog going wrong...I thought “oh no. What now?” lol Thanks for popping in to comment. Take care!
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that I like about your books is that I feel the sincerity in them. You tackle themes that people don't like to talk about. You look at the other side of life that we all try to repress, and my dear you don't have to apologise. In fact, you have been an encouragement to my own writing. I am doing a final revision for a publisher who is very interested in offering me a home for my stories. I write romantic fiction from the heart and I write my love scenes as realistic as I can based on what I think a love scene should entail. I want those scenes to make people think about what loving a person is all about. So, what I am trying to say is that in many ways your books have always encouraged me to be real.
Keep being real! That is what successful living is all about.
Shalom aleichem,
Pat Garcia
Kinder words have never been directed at me. You make me cry, thank you. They are happy tears! I'm blown away. I wish you all success with your publisher, and I see your hopes coming to fruition. You write a love story like no one I've ever read. You've achieved your goal! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
DeleteIt sounds like a powerful, scary, and troubling book, but a topic that needs to be confronted head on (and what better place that the beauty of wild Alaska). Thanks for the review congratulations to Yolanda.

Thank you, Jeff!
DeleteWow, this sounds like a remarkable book. I think the setting of Alaska really suits the genre. Nice to learn about your new release, Yolanda. Thanks for sharing her book, Chrys. Is the giveaway for US residents only?
ReplyDeleteWorld wide, but all books won outside the US will be ebooks. Hope you win!
DeleteEvil exists, I agree. No apology needed. Great post. Congrats on book release!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Juneta!
DeleteYes, it is great when a series of books allows the main character to grow throughout. Otherwise, the series would get stale.
ReplyDeleteI agree, thanks Liz!
DeleteIt took guts to write such a heroic book and put yourself out there for everyone to read in the guise of these characters. I've heard of abuse victims, some are destroyed by their ordeal and never recover, shame, horror, denial, revulsion, shock, if only... shoulda coulda.... You have an ineffable quality as a humanist for doing this, thank you.
ReplyDeleteSome of us never truly do recover, but we make it look good. Thank you, Spacer Guy, for your kind words!
DeleteHi Chrys and Yolanda - sadly it happens during Covid too. An excellent endorsement for Yolanda's book coming from you Chrys, who has experienced rather too much of the nasty side of life = which no-one should need to go through. Thank you for promoting Yolanda's book - and using your knowledge to promote it ... take care and all the best in these difficult times - Hilary
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hilary, for following the tour! Chry's help is an awesome advantage!
DeleteYolanda, thank you for taking your personal story of strength and courage and turning a tough topic into one that people can read in your book. Well done!
ReplyDeleteStay healthy and safe,
Elsie
Thank you, Elsie! You stay safe and well too!
