Welcome to another vlog post on Write with Fey.
Hurricane season started on June 1st, so I thought it would be appropriate to share two videos I did for Hurricane Crimes. The first is about my experience with hurricanes. And the second is a short reading from Hurricane Crimes.
Enjoy!

Thanks for watching!
Whenever we prep for hurricane season, I struggle between doing "enough" - whatever that is - and going all out zombie apocalypse/The Walking Dead prep. Sigh. Fingers crossed it's a calm season!
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I always start to prep for hurricane season around April or May.
DeleteYeah, once a hurricane blows through, it gets really hot and still. Which does suck when you have no power. We've only lost power for a day or so, but areas in our town have flooded badly after the past few hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the catfish made it?
Oh, it sucks sooo bad.
DeleteI've wondered about that, too. It was flooded for a long time. I hoped that it would've found a ditch somewhere, but once that water went down...
I remember Francis. Floyd was our first experience with hurricanes and the eye went right over our town. We really thought the roof was coming off. No catfish afterwards, but it was frog and cicada shell city afterwards.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! Yeah, Frances was a tough b-i-t-c-h. lol I thought our roof was going to do. She shredded out porch roof, knocked down the garage door and a huge tree, and flattened my neighbor's fence. I don't remember if I mentioned all that in the video or not.
DeleteI'm glad the catfish made your day:) It must have been frightening to be in a hurricane and I am glad the water didn't rise further to flood your trailer. I do remember some horrible thunder storms and one was too close for comfort. I was still living at home, a teen, and it was around 6pm because we always had the news on the tv. My mom was very nervous and anxious when thunderstorms came (due to her war experience) so my mom said she better turn off the tv. She was just ready to go in front of the tv to turn it off (before remotes) when the Tv burst and the glass was sent flying. Mom was ok but the TV was done. Later, my dad went out to the sawmill and the hydro metre was also blasted out and that is very thick glass. The electrician said that we got hit by lightening.
ReplyDeleteThat catfish sure inspired me. I mean, he's a character in Seismic Crimes! Well, for one scene. haha
DeleteI am glad that you're mom wasn't hurt from that. Oh my gosh!
We had a summer storm rip through our town that knocked out our electric for a week. That was plenty for me. I don't ever want to experience a hurricane!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't, Elizabeth!
DeleteHurricane season last so long. The worst I experience so far went directly over Tavares at a CAT 4, year before last, I think. We fair well in our neighborhood as its fairly new and lines were underground but leave the neighborhood and power was out for over a week. My few other experience was more Tropical Rain Storms as we are a little further inland.
ReplyDeleteIt does. Now-a-days, it starts sooner and ends later than usual, too.
DeleteHow lucky to have underground power lines.
That must've been incredibly scary, Chrys. Now, it seems each year they get worse. Love your reading from Hurricane Crimes!
ReplyDeleteIt was scary.
DeleteThank you! :)
I'm still getting used to hurricane season in Florida. They weren't nearly as big a deal in the mountains of Northern New Hampshire. In all my time there, only one ever made it up that far. It's a vastly different experience here.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine.
Deletei have been through several hurricanes, but i have managed to avoid the really bad ones. fingers crossed for this year
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
My fingers are crossed for you, Sherry!
DeleteI don't think I ever want to be in a hurricane situation. Give me a blizzard any day.
ReplyDeleteI'm writing about a blizzard now. I don't think you want the blizzard my characters go through. lol
DeleteI want to move and am looking at the sorts of natural disasters that plague other parts of the country--tornadoes, extreme heat/cold, and hurricanes. Somehow, earthquakes don't look so bad!
ReplyDeleteJust don't read Seismic Crimes.... lol
DeleteWhen I lived in Illinois, we had an earthquake. I thought a plane had flown too close to the house. Everything rattled and shook. Then we had an aftershock a few hours later. After my daughter moved to the Bay Area and experienced her first earthquake she told me it was "off putting." That was a pretty mild description.
Deletescary....
ReplyDeleteVery.
DeleteI'm glad hurricanes stay far away from my part of the world.
ReplyDeleteYou are fortunate.
DeleteI've seen so much snow that I don't really want to read about it. I think we've had two hurricanes since I moved here almost 10 years ago (Matthew and Hermine). My son stayed with me during both of them, which was comforting. We haven't had serious damage from a hurricane. Just branches and leaves to clean up. I've found hurricanes to be rather dull. We sit around and watch TV and then we read and then the electricity goes off for a bit and we're even more bored. You've had much more interesting hurricane experiences than I've had, but you've also experienced more hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I'm glad you haven'te had serious hurricane damage.
DeleteIf you don't want to read about snow, you won't want to read Frozen Crimes. I'm writing it now and HOPE to publish it next year.
Being a rare blood courier on flooded roads during Katrina, Rita, Ike, and a dozen others was nerve racking. My apartment complex was trashed during Rita, and my city mandated an evacuation. For months Gypsy, my valiant cat, and I were refugees living from room to room in various motels. No fun!
ReplyDeleteMy earliest recollection of a hurricane was from the mid-'50s. I can't remember the name of the hurricane (Irene, maybe?) but it destroyed soooo many homes on the Maryland and Delaware coast. A lot of them weren't built on stilts back then, but they were sure re-built with them.
ReplyDeletevery sad....
Deletelike Hurricane Katharina in New Orleans almost two decades ago, even City is not rebuilt yet
Yikes! You definitely got firsthand info for your writing.
ReplyDeleteI sure did!
DeleteI went through 3 hurricanes when I lived in Florida. We had a tornado and flooding. Not fun! Fortunately our house remained standing with little damage, other than what happened from the flood.
ReplyDeleteI have never experienced a tornado. And I hope I never do.
DeleteI loved hearing your experiences with hurricanes. I've been through a few. One of the biggest was Gloria when I was a teenager on Long Island. We didn't have power for about a week. Then Matthew not long ago. Now I have a great hurricane kit in my closet. Food, MREs, crank radio, you name it, it's in there. Being trapped in my neighborhood taught me well. :)
ReplyDeleteElsie
Matthew did cause a lot of damage for many people.
DeleteI also have a hurricane kit in my closet and own a crank radio. I love it!
Loved both your videos!! You sure have had experiences with hurricanes! I'm on the other side, snow and ice storms! Great post!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteGreat idea with the video. I grew up near the coast of NC, just off the intracoastal waterway, and for the 14 years I lived there, we never had a direct hurricane strike. I moved in the next few years they had three and since then have had a few more including Florence which was pretty bad. I moved back near the coast of GA, and there’s been two storms, with Matthew being the worse, but those on the marsh got flooded with Irma.

You were fortunate to miss those.
DeleteCool!
ReplyDeleteHurricanes are crazy. I've been caught outside in a few. Trying to both stay warm and not drown is a crazy mix of difficult.
Hurricanes are a disaster all their own.
DeleteAre you anywhere near Tornado Alley Fey?, which is where the bulk of the state's activity takes place, I hope you're living nowhere near them Fey. Interesting cliffhanger
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not. I live in the central part of Florida but on the east coast. so hurricanes are always a threat. I am fortunate to have not experienced a tornado, and I sure hope that I never do.
