Thank you to everyone participating in the Souper Blog Hop. If you're visiting, I hope you enjoy the recipes we share. Don't forget to check out my mom's picture book Pea Soup Disaster!
When I was little, I loved soup. I even would say it was my favorite thing to eat. And, yes, I did what Gregory does in Pea Soup Disaster and brought a thermos of soup to school for lunch. And...yes again...split pea soup was my favorite, followed by tomato soup.
I was about ten years old when I made soup from scratch for the first time. My mom would peel the potatoes and cut the onions for me, but I diced the potatoes and other vegetables by myself. I'd add carrots, celery, and diced tomatoes at the end. And I'd season it with way too many spices. My favorites were basil, celery seed, celery salt, onion powder, and garlic salt. So, my soup would be quite salty and a bit spicy, but I was very proud of it.
As a teen, my friends would beg me to make chicken Ramen Noodle because they claimed I made it so well. Once again, I'd add far too much seasoning. Yup, celery seed, garlic salt, and basil. Oddly enough, they loved it.
The recipe I'm sharing today does not involve celery seed or Ramen Noodle, though. Thank goodness!
Easy Pea Soup with Tomatoes
1 cup small, diced potato (peeled)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 large tomato, chopped
1 can chicken broth
1 can Campbell's Condensed Green Pea Soup
1/4 teaspoon dried sage
Salt and pepper to taste
1. Mix 1 can Campbell's Condensed Green Pea Soup with 1 can of chicken broth.
2. Add potato, onion, and tomato.
3. Add dried sage and salt and pepper to taste.
4. Cover and simmer until potatoes are tender.
5. Fill up a bowl and enjoy!
And now, a round of applause for my mom's picture book...PEA SOUP DISASTER!
BLURB: Gregory Green loves his mom’s pea soup, but when he eats it at school, all of his friends make fun of how it looks. He doesn’t think it looks like bugs, and it tastes good! Then at recess, his friends run from him, screaming, “He’s a monster!” Gregory doesn’t know why his friends are being mean until he sees his skin is green. The teasing gets worse until an unlikely friend comes to the rescue—his teddy bear, Sammy. Sammy usually only comes to life for Gregory and his family, but Sammy has an important lesson to teach Gregory and his classmates.

QUESTIONS: Whats your favorite soup? Do you have or did you ever have a betta fish? Do you have tattoos?
I never thought of adding tomatoes to pea soup. I make it often from scratch and will have to try it with tomatoes next time.
ReplyDeleteFish are fun, especially if you have a cat. Right now Rocket is pawing at my fish tank as if she could reach the fish that way.
Tomatoes make it extra yummy. I’m too lazy now to make slit pea Soup from scratch. ;)
DeleteIt’s funny because none of my cats have realized I got my betta fish. lol
I don’t have any tattoos - too scared of needles. I like your tattoo is that n memory of someone. Very sweet.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your mom on her release. 😊
Ellen
Thank you, Ellen! :)
DeleteCongrats Elaine on the new release and Chrys on the blog hop.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in the blog hop, Juneta! And for visiting all of the other participants (whose posts are up right now). :)
DeleteCongratulations to Elaine!
ReplyDeleteCelery seed is not my favorite spice. Or vegetable.
Haha! I was an odd child...thinking celery seed was a cool spice to add to soup. :P
DeleteThanks for commenting, Alex!
Hope the blog fest is a success and congrats to Elaine.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
Thank you, Yvonne! :)
DeleteHurrah for the big debut. Congrats to Elaine!
ReplyDeleteI probably add too much spice to my soups as well, but I try not to go bonkers on the salt. There's so much in canned soups, canned beans, and broth already.
We got a 20 gallon fish tank about six years ago and keep small fish. They die all the time, probably because I'm overfeeding them. I love beta fish. They are beautiful.
I am much better at not adding too many spices now. Usually a bit of garlic powder, a dash of salt, a dash of cloves and done. :)
DeleteThank you, Tamara! And thank you so much for participating in the blog hop!
Your easy tomato pea soup sounds yummy. I'll have to try it. Years ago, when my boys were still at home, we had fish, I don't remember what kinds. Maybe goldfish and others.
ReplyDeleteThat is a neat tattoo. I've never been brave enough to have one.
Congratulations to Elaine on a great, fun story.
I had goldfish when I was little, but they never lived long. :\
DeleteThank you for the support you've given my mom's book!
Never had pea soup before. My favorite soup is chicken soup with noodles. Funny how you named your new fish after the same deity. Last time I had a fish, there were several of them and tiny. Left the fish bowl on a windowsill during a NYC heatwave and you can guess what happened next.
ReplyDeleteLike your tattoo. It's a wonderful way to remember you grandmother by.
Really? A lot of people have said that during this blog hop. I love pea soup, but I know some people don't. Everyone should try it at least once. Or at least I think so. ;)
DeleteYes, I wanted to honor my old betta fish but give this one his own name.
Thank you!
I do like pea soup, but adding tomatoes...nah. I have had a beta fish and no tattoos.
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
That;s okay. Tomatoes aren't for everyone. But with this simple recipe, you can add whatever you like. :)
DeleteThis soup recipe sounds so good and simple to make. I'll have to try it out!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I hope it comes out as yummy as it sounds for you
DeleteI think I am the only person out there that is not one for soup. I can eat it and I like chicken noodle but it has to have a lot of stuff in it because, it is mainly brother, I won't eat it. Congrats to your mom and her new book because, I would turn green if I had to eat pea soup:) I am not one for tattoos so I have none but I think this is a nice homage to your grandmom. If you are too scared to wear the necklace maybe you can drape it over a picture of your grandmom.
ReplyDeleteAlex said he’s not a soup person. I know soup isn’t for everyone.
DeleteThank you, Birgit!
I do have the necklace draped over the corner of my bulletin collage. :)
I do love homemade pea soup, but I've never put any tomatoes in it before. Not sure how well that would go over with my hubby. He hates cooked chunks of tomato in anything. (Repercussions from having to eat stewed tomatoes as a kid, I think...) So to add tomatoes, I have to puree them. :)
ReplyDeleteNo tattoos here, but my kids have them. We had a lot of fish over the years. My favorites were in our older son's salt water tank, but OY! did the spray from it ever ruin the wallboard.
Ah. So you have to get sneaky with the tomatoes, huh? lol
DeleteSliced Zucchini is also good in this recipe.
Ooh that soup sounds tasty, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou’re welcome!
DeleteOverdoing the seasoning is one of the habits that I had - using just a bit more of another to mask the overuse of the first... Fun blog hop and I loved the book.
ReplyDeleteIt is very easy to overdo seasoning in soups.
DeleteI told my mom you said you were getting her picture book and that made her very happy. :)
I learned the hard way LOL that to correct an oversalted soup/gravy/sauce to add a raw potato. Somehow, it absorbs the extra salt. I love split pea soup. Have to be content with canned soup because Hubs doesn't like it, and I wouldn't make a huge pot just for myself. Wishing your mom all the best on her debut book.
ReplyDeleteReally? I never knew to add a potato, but that does make sense. Thanks for the tip!
DeleteJust realised that I used to love Erwtensoep = Dutch Pea Soup - and I forgot about that. Here's a recipe: https://www.holland.com/global/tourism/information/traditional-dutch-food/dutch-pea-soup.htm
ReplyDeleteYummy! Thank you!
DeleteChicken ramen noodles...I lived on that stuff in college. So good!
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about getting a better fish. I've never had a betta fish before, but in college I had a black Molly fish named Fluffy.
Love the new tattoo!
better fish= betta fish. Thanks, Auto Correct.
DeleteI still have Ramen every now and then.
DeleteBetta fish have such personalities and are beautiful to look at. You should get one. And no worries...I read better fish as betta fish anyway. lol
Congrats to your mom on the release.
ReplyDeleteI guess you were the soup queen growing up, huh?
Thank you!
DeleteMore like the soup princess. Haha
Congratulations to your mom!
ReplyDeleteI like this soup, sounds really good.
Thank you, Kelly!
DeleteThis is a cool recipe. I never would have thought to put tomatoes in a pea soup. My favorite soup is actually a pie, a chicken pot-pie recipe I cam up with myself. It's a little sweeter than the traditional pot-pie because I use very little salt and substitute sweet potatoes in place of carrots. I never had a beta fish, but I did have gold fish.
ReplyDeleteMaking chicken pot pie soup sounds like a lot of fun. I love pot pies, so I know I’d love that soup.
DeleteTomato pea soup... Sounds like an interesting combination.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not really a combo of two soups. It’s one soup with tomatoes added to it.
DeleteI would never think to combine tomato soup and pea soup!
ReplyDeleteOh no, I’m not combining tomato soup and pea soup. I’m using canned green pea soup and added chopped tomatoes...
DeleteI love soups! I hate that it is often more expensive to buy whole chickens than parts, cause I like using parts for stock and then freezing it (in the freezer you'd find a lot of stock frozen--chicken and sweet potato). My favorite soup is butternut squash or Brunswick Stew. But no tattoos or fish, but if I ever got a tattoo it would be small and meaning like that-I'm not a big ink fan...
ReplyDeletebtw, I prefer to start with dried beans--if not enough time I will fix them in a pressure cooker (and you can fix and freeze extra).
I've never had much luck working with dried peas. And when I want pea soup, I want it now! haha I don't want to wait for peas to soak and soften, etc. I'm impatient. ;)
DeleteNever cared for tattoos, so I don't have one.
ReplyDeleteAS for soup, I hate to admit but I do not like split pea or tomato. My mother used to make split pea all the time growing up and I used to eat it all the time, but I later lost the taste for it. My favourite soup is chicken noodle and ramen. Ironically enough, I have made both from scratch within the past few months and shared with others. My nephew absolutely LOVED my Ramen.
Many people either love pea soup or hate it. I understand. But I'm not combining the two soups for this recipe. For some reason every thinks so based on the recipes title. Oops.
DeleteI've never made Ramen from scratch. Now I want to try it.
Yea, I kind of thought you were combining the two also. LOL
DeleteYou have to make ramen from scratch. You will be amazed how much better it tastes when it's not those basic kits you buy in the store. And then you can dress it up the way it's supposed to be, boiled eggs, meats and spices. The Instagram photo of the completed ramen was also a hit. :D ha-ha
I figured. I went back and changed the recipe's title. lol
DeleteOh yum. Now you have me hungry for proper Ramen. Am I following you on Instagram? I'll have to check.
I always liked broccoli and cheddar soup; I used to order it all the time at the Soup Box in Chicago, and I liked dipping their sourdough bread in it. It tasted so good during the winter. I'm not very good at making soup, or any kind of food really. I only know a few recipes because I don't have the patience or knowledge to keep myself from messing up recipes (and believe me, I've tried many times).
ReplyDeleteThen this would be a good recipe for you... if you like pea soup, of course. For this recipe, you're adding broth and chopped tomato to a can of condensed green pea soup. So easy! I don't have any patience when it comes to eating pea soup, so this recipe is perfect for me.
DeleteI like soup when its really cold!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Elaine.
Thanks for commenting!
DeleteLoved hearing about your memories of making soup with your mom. My favorite right now is butternut squash soup from Panera. Congrats to your mom on the release of her book!
ReplyDeleteI've never had Panera's butternut squash soup, but it sounds good.
DeleteThank you, Natalie!
Hi Chrys - congratulations to your Ma for her book .. it looks to be a load of fun for youngsters and families. An evening meal of soup, fresh bread and cheese - always so delicious for just chilling out. I'm into Chowder here ... but I'll happily eat most soups but rarely do ... the Canadian take on soup may encourage me to have it more often. Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hilary! Oh yum, Soup, bread, and cheese. That's my idea meal right there. :)
DeleteCongrats to Elaine!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe! Looks yummy!
I love your tattoo!
Big Hugs!
Thank you! xoxo
DeleteOhh! Soup? Yum!
ReplyDeleteYup. And I just had this soup for lunch today. :)
DeleteI love matzah ball soup with vegetable broth and lots of mushrooms, dill, and carrots! If I ever get a tattoo, it'll have to be on a place my Orthodox friends couldn't see (like my upper arm). I'd love to have the words "All things must pass" and "Be here now" in George Harrison's own handwriting, from his book I, Me, Mine (which has a lot of reproductions of his handwritten lyrics). It would mean a lot to have his words, in his own handwriting, on my body for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteI've never had matzah ball soup, but I like to try different things and experience things from different religions and cultures, so it is something I'd like to try.
DeleteI had fun going around and collecting these recipes! What a great sentiment for your tattoo--I love that. It came out great.
ReplyDeleteYay! I’m glad you got all the recipes. We hoped that would be the case. :)
DeleteMy favourite soup is one made from the remains of a roast chicken, but oddly I've developed a mini craving for cream of onion soup ... wonder if I can remember how to make it.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think I’ve ever had cream of onion soup. It sounds like a good soup to put over chicken and rice or make sloppy joes with.
DeleteI love soup and have recently gotten into making it. Your recipe sounds delightful.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great book!
I have had beta fish before- I really love fish tanks.
~Jess
I hope you got some good recipes from this hop so you can make more soup. :)
