I am over at Unicorn Bell with Dear "My Writing Sucks!" Writer.
Venom is Donovan’s monster truck. I had a blast writing a scene
where Donovan takes Beth on a ride in his truck and performs a few tricks for
her. It was fun learning the ins and outs of these trucks, how they work, and
about the tricks. I enjoyed it so much that I created a post to help anyone who
may (for whatever reason) want to write a monster truck driving scene.
You can
find that here: Writing About: Monster Truck Driving
Venom is neon green, my favorite color, with a black cobra posing
to strike on the side. Hence the name. But Donovan explains it better than I
do.
Seismic Crimes Teaser:
Beth examined the console with the curiosity of a six-year-old.
“Why do you call your truck Venom?”
Their eyes locked.
“Because venom is fast and lethal.” He revved the engine, sending
vibrations up their legs and spines. “Don’t worry,” he repeated. “There are
three kill switches.”
When Beth blinked at him, he stepped on the gas pedal. The monster
truck shot out of the garage. He maneuvered it around the building toward the
course he had built to practice stunts. Earlier in the month, he had to rebuild
the ramps that had gone flat and muddy from flooding.
Driving along the edge of the field, he forced the truck to go as
fast as its engine would allow. Adrenaline coursed eagerly through his veins,
like the methanol flushing through the engine.
Venom.
Deadly, but addicting.

QUESTION: Would you ride in a monster truck?
I'd ride in a monster truck any old day. But people better get out of my way.
ReplyDeleteDon't mess with the Cat in a monster truck!
DeleteMy kids wanted to go to a monster truck rally when they were little. The idea of four small boys in a coliseum with all that noise gave me a headache. So, I pretended it was sold out. Yes, I have bad mom moments.
ReplyDeleteThe noise would give me a headache, too. I'd probably do the same thing, but then again...I'd like to experience it once.
DeleteI don't think I would ever go to a Monster Truck rally(famous saying never) but, if someone else was driving...You betcha! It seems like it would be a lot of fun
ReplyDeleteI think it would be a lot of fun being a passenger.
DeleteI don't think I'd turn down a ride, but I wouldn't seek one out, either.
ReplyDeleteGood logic.
DeleteSure, I'd try it once. As long as I'm not the one driving.
ReplyDeleteI'd only drive if I was in a big, smooth field and could drive straight. lol
DeleteHi Chrys - I was working for a tiny photographic ad agency when Convoy came out ... could and still can't get my head away when that song is triggered - as you've done here! Love your excerpt and can quite see it in a book ...
ReplyDeleteClever - cheers Hilary
Thanks, Hilary!
DeleteGreat post Chrys, enjoyed reading your excerpt and I too can remember the Convoy song.Enjoy your week-end.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
I'm actually not sure what the Convoy song is...
DeleteMeth injected - now that's a good time! (Gearhead here)
ReplyDeleteResearching and writing about strange vehicles is always fun. In our latest, we had to learn all about Antarctic snow vehicles, aka the Hägglund. The driver did a few tricks as well, but he also killed so, so many penguins (RIP).
LOL!
DeleteKilled penguins? My gosh. Want an ass.
That was a fun scene, Chrys! Now, I'll be checking out your Unicorn Bell post :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa! And thanks for tweetng my UB post. :)
DeleteGreat name for a monster truck. I might try riding in one. If it got too scary, I'd close my eyes. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd close my eyes, too. lol
DeleteGotta love researching. Sometimes it's so enticing you do more of that than you do of writing. It's a legit problem.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had fun. It was a good little read!
A legit problem, indeed.
DeleteThanks! :)
A perfect name for that truck!
ReplyDeleteI think so, too. ;)
DeleteMy brother loved the monster trucks. The names of the trucks have always been so spot on and that would be a great name for a monster truck.
ReplyDeleteDeadly but addicting. Kinda reminds me of Daredevil on Netflix.
